like every other problem the irs has, inadequate staffing is fundamentally caused by inadequate funding. as the irs budget declined by 20 percent between 2010 and 2021, staffing declined by about the same percentage, dropping from 94,711 full-time positions to just 75,773. meanwhile, of course, the number of taxpayers increased.

and, now, with the prospects of a federal government shutdown and a multi-trillion-dollar spending bill, 2022 is shaping up to be deja vu all over again.

to be sure, a good number of accountants are assuaged by more clients and more revenue. but the 卡塔尔世界杯常规比赛时间 business barometer finds preparers experiencing a long, tough slog.

in all, 53 percent say they had a busy season somewhat worse (27 percent) or much worse (26 percent) than last year.

for some, it seems like a good time to call it quits. “thank you for all the love and support,” says one firm’s auto-responder to incoming emails.

“as some of you may know, this past few tax seasons have been nothing short of chaotic, to say the least,” the three-office, north carolina tax shop tells callers. “but i have enjoyed being able to assist each and every one of my clients.”

most accountants believe that 98 percent of small businesses – virtually all – are failing to fully comply with all the interstate sales tax issues they may be liable for. and yet, about 71 percent of accountants are falling short of handling all their clients’ sales tax issues, with about 12 percent saying they address “most” issues, 36 percent handling “some,” and 24 percent handling none, according to the new study conducted in conjunction with avalara, the tax management software company.

the internal revenue service isn’t supposed to consider a taxpayer’s income or wealth when prioritizing taxpayer delinquent accounts. rather, the service is supposed to focus on balances due, pursuing collection of higher amounts.

obviously, many of those higher balances are owed by taxpayers (or tax dodgers) in the higher adjusted gross income brackets, and the irs believes that pursuing high balance dues effectively addresses high agis.

but the treasury inspector general for tax administration says that focusing on the balance due is increasing the risk of high earners skipping out on what they owe.
