management needs to ask staff some tough questions. here are 10 toughies.
1. what’s the biggest obstacle to you maximizing productivity? look for bottlenecks in processes, management, bureaucracy, ineffective teams, etc.
2. do you feel you are being treated fairly here and are recognized for your work? look for issues in morale, fair treatment, reasonable workloads, expressed appreciation for accomplishments.
3. if you could change one thing about our management, what would it be? you need to see the view from the trenches. and you need to respect what they say.
4. when was the last time you felt stressed out? how can we prevent that from happening again? once you’ve asked these questions, you’d better do something about the answers.
5. are you satisfied with your training and opportunities to learn? ask what they’d like to learn and how they’d like to learn it. note that no desire to learn may be a morale or culture issue.
6. what is management failing to see or understand about the firm? this is valuable information if you can bring it to light.
7. do you see yourself still here in three years? why or why not? and, depending on the answer, ask how management could impact that expectation.
8. where do you see other firms doing better business than we do? look for competitive weakness in tech, compensation, marketing, training.
9. what troubles you the most during tax season? look for insights into workflow, resourcing, unrealistic expectations, other personnel.
10. what’s one idea you have that could make this a better place to work? see if you can turn a complaint into constructive feedback. let people see this question as a chance to give them power to shape the firm and improve all aspects of the office.
these questions will work best in a confidential, one-on-one conversation, but you might try a group discussion in an informal session. trust will be essential. show appreciation for honest answers. and don’t get defensive. the painful answers are the most important.
